Swansea students cycle and row 1,000km for Sport Relief

Visitors to Swansea’s Quadrant Shopping Centre tomorrow will have the chance to support a group of military youngsters, as they aim to complete an ambitious quest to row and cycle 1,000km in just four days!

The group of 16-19 year olds, from the Military Preparation College – based at the Morfa Territorial Army Centre near the liberty stadium – have been hitting the static bike and rowing machine in Quadrant’s ‘community space’, just outside Debenhams, on Thursday and Friday as part of the immense Sport Relief challenge.

Instructor Phil Jones explained that the group had been split into 3 teams of 20 students to cover the colossal distance for charity.

“We spent two days earlier this week at the 360 Café just down the road from Quadrant, and we covered 510km,” he said. “Obviously everyone has very tired legs now, so we’re hoping people will turn out in their droves to support us over the last big push at Quadrant.”

Phil explained that the students are all currently on a training programme that consists of a BTEC qualification in public services, and are being supported in their efforts by the Royal Welsh regiment, also located at the TA Centre. “The majority of our students have aspirations to join one of the armed forces,” he said. “Some are currently in the selection process, so we’re working them very hard for this charity challenge!”

Lisa Hartley, Quadrant Shopping Centre manager, said she was delighted the young men and women from the Military Prep College were completing their cycling and rowing challenge at the heart of the city.

“Our community space has been set aside for this just kind of fantastic effort by local groups and individuals,” said Lisa. “We love supporting fundraising campaigns and this 1,000km challenge is a great way for Quadrant to get behind not just our local military students but also the national Sport Relief campaign.

“We’re hoping that our colleagues here and of course our shoppers will all come along and show their support to the young men and women as they row and pedal their way towards their target on Friday.”

The Military Preparation College 1,000km Challenge will be at Quadrant Shopping Centre, in the community space, outside Debenhams on Friday 23 March. The youngsters will be giving their all from 9.30am to 3pm, and donation buckets will be on hand to collect funds for Sport Relief 2018.
