Quadrant honours heroism this Remembrance Day

Swansea shoppers are invited to pay their own personal respects this Armistice Day as Quadrant Shopping Centre opens its Garden of Remembrance as part of its Poppy Appeal Week.

 

Taking place on Monday 28 October at 12pm,members of the public are invited to join local dignitaries, Lord Lieutenant of West Glamorgan, Bryon Lewis, High Sheriff of West Glamorgan, Sally Goldstone, and the Lord Mayor of Swansea, Councillor Peter Black, to the opening of this symbolic tribute.

 

Honouring service men and women who have given their lives to secure freedom for future generations, Armed Forces ‘sweetheart’, Kirsten Orsborn, will also be singing at the opening ceremony, with an inspiring and poignant performance.

 

Lisa Hartley, Quadrant Shopping Centre manager, said: “This is the fourth year we have hosted the Garden of Remembrance, which provides a sanctitude for members of the community to come together in respect for our fallen soldiers.

 

“We especially want to offer a legacy of commemorative celebration that marks this significant date that can be passed down to the younger generations and our Poppy Appeal Week is geared up for just this.”

 

Throughout the week there will be performances from the likes of the 215 Royal Air Force Band, City of Swansea Pipe Band and Kirsten Orsborn will be making a welcome return on Tuesday 29 October and Satruday 2 and Sunday 3 November. All money raised money will go towards the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

 

Sqn Ldr Phill Flower, Community Fundraiser for South West Wales and organiser of the event, said: “The Garden of Remembrance is a chance for people from across the community to come together to remember and give thanks to those whose lives have been lost in defending our country’s freedom.”

 

“Last year we raised more than £7,500 which was a fantastic result. We always receive outstanding support from its management team and with the very generous donations from its customers, we hope to raise even more this year.”

 

Members of the public are invited to the opening ceremony of the Garden of Remembrance, which is taking place on Monday 28 October at 12pm. The garden will be open every day from 9am to 6pm until Sunday 3 November. Throughout the week there will also be the opportunity to buy poppies from a dedicated stand in Centre Square.

 

The centre will also be observing the two-minute silence on Armistice Day on 11 November.
